A new report published today confirms the view of our platform that Mental Service Users are being treated as ” second class citizens “ by the the Irish State and it’s agencies .

The Annual report by the Mental Health Commission an independent body state that basic humane rights of many residents in mental health settings continue to be overlooked .

We have seen how 18,000 young  ASD adults  have had their day care and respite services  removed and they and their families and carers are completely abandoned by the State.

Today we discover how children and young adults with mental health issues are struggling to get basic services

Todays report showed that children and young people in crisis are left the unacceptable “choice”: between an Emergency Department, General Hospital ,Children’s Hospitals or an Adult Inpatient Unit .

The Commission warned that they should not be admitted to adult units except in exceptional circumstances.

In 2019 , 65% of child admissions were female .The youngest resident was aged 11 with over 208 instances of over capacity in 2019.

The majority were due to more emergency admissions .Other reasons included voluntary admissions ,no available discharges and return from leave .

In 2019 the Commission took 40 enforcement actions in relation to incidents , events and serious concerns .

The Mental Health Commission said that to make a real and lasting difference in service standards the mental health systems needs to be tackled in a unified way.

Last month the caretaker Government launched a new mental health policy and it is now up to the many new Ministers appointed yesterday to implement this policy .
