The UN Convention on Disability Rights was finally ratified by the Irish Government with the document now sent to the United Nations in New York, where if will be formally ratified .

Ireland was the last of 27 European Union states to ratify the convention, which was adopted by the UN on 2006 .

The convention protects equal treatment for all people with disabilities with respect to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

We are still awaiting the signing of the instrument of ratification by the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs .

The convention is vital for people with disabilities in that hit protects and ensures the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms .

We have worked on getting the Irish Government to ratify this convention for many years and expressed concerns over the length of time it has taken to get to todays point given that the convention was adopted by the uN in 2006.

However the ratification of this treaty will not improve the current situation for persons with disabilities in Ireland where the number of children waiting for assessment of needs surging by over 28% this year .

It is vital that this ratification is back up with action with a implementation plan with delivering dates to include education, public transport, income support employment and housing .
